The European Commission has published its proposal for the 16th edition of the European List of Ship Recycling Facilities, the register of yards approved to recycle EU-flagged ships under the Ship Recycling Regulation.
The proposal would add two more Indian yards, continuing the recognition of non-OECD facilities that meet the regulation's safety and environmental requirements. European shipowners have welcomed the wider choice of compliant capacity for green, regulated recycling.
The listing matters commercially because owners of EU-flagged tonnage must send end-of-life vessels to approved yards; a longer list eases a capacity squeeze that had concentrated compliant recycling in a handful of locations.
