Hamburg Terminal Switches On Private 5G Network

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have deployed a private 5G campus network at HHLA's Container Terminal Altenwerder in the Port of Hamburg, one of Europe's most automated terminals.

Covering around one square kilometre, the network connects vehicles, sensors, mobile devices and IT systems across the terminal, providing stable high-performance communications even under heavy load. It also serves as a digital testbed, letting the operator and its partners trial new applications under real operating conditions before moving them into live use.

The project, known as PROCON-5G, is part of Germany's Digital Test Fields in Ports funding programme and runs independently of the public mobile network on locally allocated spectrum.
